Every generation of Nigerian children will come to experience almost the same pattern of upbringing as long as their parents are Nigerians and were themselves rasied by Nigerians. There are things most Nigerian parents say/do just to get their kids to comply even without threatening to spank. For instance, a Nigerian mom doesn’t have to express her displeasure with your action with words, all she may do is look at you and you would instantly understand that there is fire on the mountain. We bring you 5 things Nigerian parents say that qualifies as legendary lies…
When a Nigerian parent wants to leave the house but does not want the child to follow him/her, the easiest way to discharge the child is “Go and wear your shoes, I’ll wait.” – Nigerian moms are especially guilty of these one.
No Nigerian parent was a dullard or ever came last. The position almost all Nigerian parents held in their school days was first position – Nigerian parents will never miss the opportunity to regal their kids with tales of how the principal, maths, physics and chemistry teacher loved them because they were so sound academically.
When a Nigerian parent especially mom say, ‘let me hold the money for you’ then you know the money has forever changed ownership. If you try to remind them in future that they owe you, be prepared to be told how you were clothed, fed, housed and nurtured for free. You didn’t can pay them for those, did you???
‘If you tell me the truth, I won’t beat you’. Most Nigerian parents tell this smart lie a lot. Only about 1% of them would actually stand by their words. Even this 1% would go ahead and use your confessional statement as evidence against you.
At the beginning of the term, a Nigerian parent could be heard saying, “I’ll buy it for you if you come first in class.” when you ask for something new. The truth is, it is either just to motivate you or a plain dismissal tactics, because most times, they do not buy them even when you hold your end of the bargain.
Were these tactics for the greater good???
